Mental health programming
Since 2020, Africa Centre has recognized the critical role that mental health and work-life balance play in the well-being of our staff and the community we serve. Our mission to create opportunities for access and full participation of the African-descent community in Alberta drives our commitment to offering programs that resonate with our community’s needs.
Understanding the unique challenges our community faces, we actively engage with members to listen to their concerns and collaborate on solutions. Through this direct interaction, we identify gaps in existing services and innovate to provide effective support. For example, our counselling services offer culturally sensitive support, where trained counsellors help individuals navigate their mental health challenges. This service is designed to minimize barriers to access and provide a safe space for individuals to explore their issues and develop strategies for well-being.
Our Between Two Worlds event exemplifies our approach by bringing Afro-immigrants together to address the specific challenges of adjusting to life in Canada. This initiative fosters meaningful conversations and equips participants with practical tools for navigating their mental well-being.
Relax and Reconnect, a self-care gathering for mothers of African descent, highlights our dedication to supporting personal wellness. By creating a retreat where mothers can connect, learn and recharge, we address their unique needs and build a supportive community network.
Work-life balance through community connection
We understand that achieving work-life balance is essential for both personal fulfilment and professional effectiveness. At Africa Centre, we encourage our staff and community members to prioritize activities that foster social connections and personal well-being. By promoting participation in community events and self-care practices and maintaining boundaries between work and personal life, we help individuals focus on their overall health and happiness.
Our office culture reflects this commitment. We are dedicated to creating a welcoming, inclusive environment where everyone feels supported. Whether through counselling sessions, community gatherings, or simply offering a space to connect, Africa Centre strives to enhance mental health and build a resilient community.
Integrating these values into our programs and daily practices ensures that our mission to support and uplift the African-descent community is reflected in everything we do. This holistic approach benefits those we serve and strengthens our team’s well-being, creating a cycle of support that fosters a vibrant and connected community.
