As the Founder and CEO of UpRow, a platform dedicated to helping newcomers to Canada settle in smoothly, my career has been fueled by a deep passion for community and innovation. What started as a simple idea, inspired by my own experiences as an immigrant, has blossomed into a thriving platform that makes the transition to a new country as seamless as possible for others.
When I first arrived in Canada, I was excited about the opportunities ahead. Still, I was overwhelmed by the challenges of adjusting to a new culture, environment, and way of life. These challenges weren’t just about learning the ropes of a new country but also about managing the emotions and uncertainties that come with leaving behind everything familiar. This realization sparked the idea for UpRow, which helps newcomers settle into their new lives in Canada with confidence.
Balancing Life’s Many Roles
When I’m not working on UpRow, you’ll find me exploring the vibrant local culture of Edmonton or spending quality time with my two amazing kids, Kayja and Kalel. They keep me on my toes and remind me daily of the importance of creating a better future for the next generation. Life as a mother and entrepreneur is a beautiful adventure, and I’m all about embracing every moment with optimism and enthusiasm! My children are my biggest motivation—they inspire me to work hard and continue building something that will make their future brighter.
Reflecting on my home country, Trinidad and Tobago, one of the most striking differences in work-life balance is the emphasis on living in the moment and cherishing time with loved ones. Back home, there is a strong culture of prioritizing family gatherings, social events, and simply enjoying life’s pleasures.
In Canada, I’ve noticed a greater focus on productivity and career advancement, which can make it challenging to carve out time for those personal moments. However, I’ve also seen a growing awareness around the importance of balance and well-being. For me, the ideal approach is a blend of both: working hard and pursuing your passions but also making sure to slow down, connect with loved ones, and appreciate life’s little joys.
Strategies for Well-Being
One key strategy I’ve applied in both my career and personal life is setting clear boundaries. It’s important to protect my time and energy, whether that means sticking to specific work hours or ensuring I have quality time with my family. This helps me stay focused and present in whatever I’m doing.
Another strategy that has supported my overall well-being is prioritizing self-care. My top wellness non-negotiable is getting enough sleep. I’ve learned that when I’m well-rested, I’m more focused, energized, and ready to tackle whatever comes my way. Self-care, whether it’s a quiet moment to myself, a good book, or a relaxing walk, is essential. Without them, everything else just doesn’t run as smoothly!
Turning Challenges into Opportunities
My immigration journey was filled with challenges that I wasn’t fully prepared for, and it threw my sense of balance into complete disarray. Arriving in Canada, I was met with unexpected obstacles that left me feeling overwhelmed. Those feelings quickly turned into shame and guilt, as I felt I should have been better prepared and somehow failed my family by not having all the answers.
That difficult experience became the driving force behind UpRow. I didn’t want anyone else to feel like I did—lost, unsupported, and uncertain. UpRow was designed as a platform and community to shield immigrants from those struggles. UpRow is the resource I wish I had—a place where newcomers can find the guidance, connections, and support they need to confidently navigate their new life in Canada.
Building a community has always been at the heart of what we do at UpRow. While we provide essential services, the real impact comes from creating connections where people feel supported and part of something bigger. Strong networks not only help individuals find balance by offering mutual support but also protect the more vulnerable among us, especially newcomers.
For those starting fresh in a new country, a strong community acts as a safety net, providing guidance and reducing the stress and isolation that can come with such a major life change. By deliberately expanding and strengthening these networks, we ensure that everyone has the support they need to thrive.
Advice for Young Entrepreneurs
Securing funding and navigating the entrepreneurial journey can be incredibly consuming—it’s a marathon, not a sprint. I advise any young entrepreneur going through this process to seek help from mentors and experts early on. Don’t try to do it all alone; having experienced voices to guide you can make a world of difference.
It’s also crucial to prioritize self-care and rest. Burnout is real, and taking care of your mental health is just as important as building your business.
The opportunities for Black women are growing, and I’m proud to be part of this movement. I pause to reflect on the work of my colleague Donna, who actively protested inequalities meted against People of Colour. For me, it’s a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up for what’s right and breaking down barriers, even when it’s difficult. It also underscores the responsibility we have to continue pushing forward, not just for ourselves, but for the generation that will follow.
As I continue to navigate the challenges and joys of life, both as an entrepreneur and a mother, I remain dedicated to creating a brighter future for the next generation. I am committed to embracing life’s journey with optimism, resilience, and a deep sense of purpose.
